Tony Khan is reportedly still “really mad” at AEW star Jack Perry over the CM Punk backstage situation several months ago.
At AEW All In London in August 2023, Perry commented “real glass, cry me a river” into the camera after slamming HOOK onto a car windshield – this came some time after reports had emerged from backstage stating that Punk had advised Perry not to use real glass for a separate TV segment.
Perry’s line reportedly led to an incident backstage right after his match involving Punk, which ultimately led to Punk being fired by AEW and Perry being suspended.
Tony Khan said he felt it was the first time “my security, my safety, my life, was in danger at a wrestling show.”
CM Punk has of course since returned to WWE, and Perry has not yet made a comeback to AEW, instead working for NJPW recently.
Speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer reported that Khan is still “really mad” at Perry even seven months after it all happened, saying:
“He has not been fired. He’s absolutely not been fired, but they’re not using him.
“Essentially, Tony’s really mad at him because he cost him CM Punk. He’s getting the blame.”
CM Punk made his WWE return at Survivor Series on November 25, 2023.
Perry would head to NJPW in January 2024, entering the New Japan Cup and facing Shota Umino on March 6.
He has gone on to refer to himself as “The Scapegoat” (seemingly a reference to the whole situation) and has now joined the House of Torture faction.
Punk has seemingly confirmed he’ll be at WrestleMania despite suffering an injury at Royal Rumble that has left him out of in-ring action.
